How to Make a Transfer on Advance Transit

Riding with Advance Transit  is all about freedom, community, and connection. With fare-free service across the Upper Valley — from Lebanon to Hanover, White River Junction to Norwich — hopping on a bus is just the start of your journey. But what if your trip needs two buses?

Watch this video from our How to Ride video series on how to make a transfer OR read on to learn how.

Let’s walk through how to make a smooth, confident transfer on the Advance Transit system.

Step 1 — Let the Driver Know
When you first board your bus, take a moment to tell the driver that you’ll be transferring to another route later on. They’re happy to help — and can even give you a heads-up when your transfer stop is coming up!

Step 2 — Ride to Your Transfer Stop
Advance Transit routes are designed so that key stops — like busy intersections or transit hubs — let you connect from one route to another. While you’re riding, keep an eye on your route on the Transit app or the live service map on advancetransit.com. These tools show real-time bus locations and arrival times, so you can time your transfer just right!

Step 3 — Get Off and Wait for Your Next Bus
Once you’ve arrived at your transfer stop, just exit the bus and wait at the same stop for your next ride. Because every Advance Transit route runs fare-free, you don’t need a ticket or pass — just hop on when your bus arrives!

Pro tip: If you’re unsure where your second bus will stop or when it’s coming, the Transit app and the Advance Transit website’s live map are great tools — they help you plan each leg of your ride with confidence.

Transfers might seem like a small piece of a trip, but they’re a big part of making public transit feel easy and empowering. Between the friendly Advance Transit drivers, helpful digital tools, and clear route maps, you’ve got everything you need to navigate the system like a pro.

Whether you’re headed to work, school, errands, or just out to see friends, Advance Transit connects you — fare-free and friendly — across our communities in Vermont and New Hampshire. Happy riding!
